Hayden’s Journey of Inspiration is dedicated to providing support to
families of pediatric patients during their pursuit of life-saving stem cell
Duke University Medical Center offers one of the most advanced pediatric stem cell transplant centers in the world. When children travel to Duke University Medical Center for stem cell transplants, the in-patient treatment lasts for months and their families must temporarily relocate to Durham, North Carolina. These families must maintain two households—often hundreds of miles apart, and sometimes for longer than a full year. Hayden and her family made this difficult journey when she was six years old with the help of their family, friends, and community.
The costs of establishing and maintaining a second home during transplant are almost never covered by health insurance. These families are in a state of crisis, and have little energy and resources to devote to renting and furnishing a second home. The stress, anxiety, and disruption of having a very sick child are compounded by these extreme financial and logistical burdens. HJI’s mission is to provide safe and comfortable homes to families during their children’s stem cell transplants at Duke University Hospital.
To date, HJI has attained three beautiful apartments that have been used by dozens of families and patients. Each of Hayden’s Homes were carefully renovated to minimize the risk of infection and to allow for maximum access and comfort for the families. Hayden and her family personally decorated each home with the goal of creating a haven away from the stress of the hospital. HJI will continue to support these homes and sustainably grow to meet the need for housing for the families of pediatric stem cell transplant patients at Duke University Medical Center.
